April 5, 2019 – Daniela Soledade is a new and compelling voice on the Brazilian musical landscape, one both fresh on the ears and blessed with authentically deep roots. Her family line includes her father Paulinho, an artist-producer whose résumé includes work with Ivan Lins and Gilberto Gil, and her grandfather Paulo, a composer during the pioneering phase

of bossa nova.
“I grew up in Rio,” Daniela explains, “in a family of musicians, basically, on both sides. I grew up in recording studios. My grandfather composed a lot of songs with Tom Jobim and Toquinho, Baden Powell, Vinícius de Moraes. Of course, my father is also a musician, and then there is me. I'm third generation, following my grandfather and Jobim,” she laughs.
As an introduction to the fresh Soledade sound, Daniela and her producer, the guitarist Nate Najar, are releasing a digital single of Marcos Valle's
So Nice (Summer Samba)
bossa nova classic, “So Nice (Summer Samba)” — in Portuguese, “Samba de Verão.” The single provides a taste of the music to be showcased on her debut album,
A Moment of You, slated for release this fall.
On the single, Daniela's soft and supple voice wafts gently over the tasteful arrangement, while her skill as a flutist (she studied flute, starting at age 14, at Music Conservatory Villa Lobos) is tucked into the caressing double-flute part in the mix.
Explaining the choice of the song as her first single release, she says “the quiet aesthetic of bossa nova is what we're focusing on. Nate got me singing in a way that's almost like a whisper, and that's the aesthetic of what this whole album is going to be. That made ‘Summer Samba’ a perfect choice to begin with.”
Najar notes, “when I think of bossa nova, I think of João Gilberto, this really quiet, intimate aesthetic. Romero Lubambo told me years ago that samba was out in the street and bossa nova is three of you in an apartment with an acoustic guitar.”
Here's a taste of Daniela Soledade's music — the single, “So Nice (Summer Samba).” It can be purchased on iTunes starting today; the album comes out this fall.
