The Jazzschool at California Jazz Conservatory will present “Canta Brasil,”
Sandy Cressman's 10-week course on Brazilian songs,
Jan. 12 - Mar. 16, 10:30-12:00 noon, at the Conservatory, 2087 Addison St., Berkeley, CA.
The course will explore various genres of Brazilian songs, including samba, bossa nova, choro, baião and frevo. Participants will learn a song from each genre along with its historical and regional roots. The course covers the unique rhythmic feeling and phrasing of each genre, and incorporates some simple percussion instruments while preparing songs for a final student performance the weekend of March 22-23.

Luiz Simas releases new song honoring indigenous people of Brazil

Brazilian musician
Luiz Simas has released his new song and music video honoring the indigenous peoples of Brazil. “Canção dos Povos Originários” (Song for the Original Peoples) was recorded in New York, Rio de Janeiro, and Porto Alegre, with Simas on piano, vocals and keyboards,
Carlos Malta on flute,
Julia Haughton on vocals, and
Paulo Roberto Brandão on additional keyboards. Brandão also mixed and mastered the track.
The very unusual song lyrics consist solely of the names of a few of the hundreds of indigenous tribes of Brazil. The music video and animation were created by
Leon Vilhena and
Duda Ásfora of the Lisbon-based company, Intermitente.

Henrique Eisenmann have released their performance of three new compositions,
Three Orcas Island Songs, from their recent concert on Orcas Island, Washington.
“Lamento de Aioca” is named for the Goddess of the Waters in the Yoruba tradition of the people in the Northeast of Brazil. “Pina” is a song by Henrique inspired by and dedicated to legendary choreographer Pina Bausch. “Kalimba Rhapsody” is the finale of the Paul Winter Consort's new “Adventures in the Universe,” which was premiered at its recent Summer Solstice Celebration at New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
